STOVER REACH PALAIRET FINALS DAY

Stover’s Palairet team beat Okehampton 3.5 to 1.5 on Sunday to reach the semi finals for the first time since 2006. In a close match played in good spirit at Tiverton, Stover took the first point when the top pairing of Jason Hampton and Matt Lyne won their match 4 & 3. The second match saw Okehampton go 5 up after they won six holes on the trot from the seventh, but the Stover pair of Andy Rich and Tom Mitchell fought back to win the next five holes to be all square after sixteen. Okehampton won the seventeenth hole and the first halved hole of the match at eighteen gave them victory by one hole. The next two matches were very close with Stover winning both matches on the seventeenth. The winning pairings were Dan Parkes and Alan Hewings and Jon Jones and Steve Allen. The final match, involving team captain Richard Pascoe and Dave Henson, was all square after eighteen holes and as Stover had a winning lead it was agreed not to play the match to a finish. Stover will now play Exeter in the semi finals on finals day at Yelverton.

On Saturday club captain, Neil Hayman, and club professional, James Langmead, teamed up to challenge members to beat their score in a fourball better ball medal. With the course in pristine condition the pair managed to post a score of three under par 66. Unfortunately for them some 10 pairs beat their score with best score of 61 returned by John Payne and Tony Lewis.

The Wednesday stableford attracted 61 competitors with Paul Silk (13) winning division one with 37 points from Graham Green (7) and Martin Wright (8) who were the best of several players with 35 points. Division two was won by Dave Mugford (15) with 41 points. Adrian Parker (17) took second place with 36 points on count back from Brian Avery (24). There were eleven twos worth 5 balls each.

The biennial visit of young golfers from Sweden has taken place this week with the junior section playing host both on and off the golf course. The culmination of the visit was the playing for the SWEG Cup which is a Ryder Cup type of competition. On Friday seven fourball matches were played with Stover winning 6.5 to .5. On Sunday seven foursome matches were played in the morning and fourteen single matches in the afternoon.

Stover won the foursomes 4.5 to 2.5 and the single matches were halved at seven matches each. Overall Stover retained the cup by 18 matches to 10. One of the highlights of the week for the Swedish team was a hole in one on the seventh by Lasse Wimhed.

This weekend Stover hosts this years Torbay Cup and will be looking to build on their Palairet success and do well in this competition as well. The top golfers from the six SDL clubs will do battle over two days for prizes kindly donated by this year’s sponsors Emery Oils and WFC Limited. Saturday will see foursomes in the morning and fourballs in the afternoon. Sunday will see the climax of the competition with eight golfers from each club playing in a singles competition. All competitions are off scratch with points awarded for the best scores in each group. Spectators are most welcome to come along and watch the best amateur golfers in South Devon. Refreshments including a barbeque will be available both days with a Presentation of Prizes to take place on completion of play on Sunday at approximately 5.30pm.

Greetings from James

Captains weekend. The reluctance was that it was raining so hard that it looked like the competition might have to be cancelled. Fortunately the weather got better and the Captains weekend was a fantastic success. The Captain Neil Hayman, Lady Captain Janet Emery and Seniors Captain Gordon Brown hosted the weekend and they were all delighted as well over £1000 was raised for the Captains charity.

The clubhouse was full on Sunday evening and Neil thanked all that had supported the weekend with their generosity shown by giving gifts/prizes for the draw. Well done to all the prize winners playing Stover at it's most difficult with testing winds and a bit sticky under foot.

Cushty for Delboy at Stover 102 Competitors took part in the PGA National Qualifier in conjunction with the Monthly Medal. The morning starters had the best of the weather as steady rain arrived early afternoon to make conditions very testing for the later starters which was reflected in the results. The popular Derek Ellis, otherwise known as ‘Delboy’, took full advantage of the better weather to return a net 63 off his 14 handicap in division one and book a place with me at the regional PGA qualifier at Saunton later in the year. Second place went to Trevor Crossfield with a nett 64 followed by Barry Chubb with a commendable nett 67 in the worst of the weather on count back from Malcolm Hall. In division two John Pitts was the comfortable winner with a nett 63 followed by Nigel Powesland with a nett 67 and Mike Badcock with a nett 70 on count back from Christopher Hart.

Following the Monthly Medal was a junior match played against local club Exminster. It was great to see so many youngsters playing and it was unfortunate that the weather was so poor but it was a great match which was eventually won by Exminster. However, many of the younger juniors gained some great experience from playing in the fixture and hopefully it will kick start the new junior season. Thank you to Alice Lang, Ryan Wheeler and Ross McCue for their help with the junior match.

The clocks going forward an hour unfortunately has not given us any great weather but hopefully Easter will bring us some sunshine. Happy Easter to you all!

Regards,
JL

PS Derek Ellis (Delboy) is keeping things pretty low key and does not to talk too much about his win. (That's what he told me the 4th time he called me to talk me through his round!!!!!!!!)

I can now confirm that on the Saturday 3rd July the former world trick shot champion will be coming to Stover Golf Club. Paul Barrington will be joining me for my Professional’s Day in what should be a spectacular showcase. Paul was also a former World Long Driving Champion (I once drove to Scotland. Does that count!!!!!!) and the show is open to all members and guests. Further details will be posted nearer the date, however I urge you to put the date in your diary as this is a day not to be missed.

Please Come and Support Captain’s Charity Weekend
Club Captain Neil Hayman already has over 200 golfers playing in his Captain’s weekend. However, we still have room for more players. The event is open to all members and is a friendly Stableford format. A BBQ will be running throughout Saturday and a Rolling Carvery on Sunday. Neil will be delighted if you could join him on either Saturday 3rd April or Sunday 4th April.

Last weekend the new bridge was in use although it is not quite complete. But it was great to have the use of the bridge back and it was nice to see golfers coming in after nine holes updating me on their progress.

We had a Texas Scramble last weekend and it was great to see Keith Gimson, Keith Revell and Matt Lyne winning with a tremendous net score of 62.1 In second place it was nice to see Euchre king Richard Pascoe, Martin Wright and Ryan Stevenson just a shot behind with 63.1.

Thursday 5th November
Last weekend we had the annual presentation evening. Each year I think it is nice to see all of the trophies out on display andwhen I see a trophy that I won umpteen years ago, it brings back some good memories.

Quite a few familiar faces collected some of the major trophies. However, it was nice to see some new members and new faces collecting the spoils. I have a small selection of prize winners below, however in due course I shall publish all the winners on my website.

The weather on Sunday was awful and the club competition was cancelled. However, on Saturday the second winter league took place and Neil Hayman and Del Boy Ellis romped home in first place (Neil is the man in form at present and is often in the frame). Well done to both of you. However, it was good to see Steve Henson and Richard Loughton in second place, as Steve has not played for about 5 months after a hip operation – he was not even sure that he would finish the round. Good for you, Steve, and it’s good to have you out plying again! Roger Fyfe and Andy Carpenter came in third with Jason Hampton and Andy Beazley in fourth place.

With the rotten weather and colder temperatures, it is easy to pack away the clubs at this time of the year. But Stover Golf Club is a far better winter course than it used to be, the drainage is much better and we use temporary greens a lot less. So keep your game in shape, wrap up warm and I’ll look forward to seeing you out on the course.

The JAHD Trophy was an eighteen hole Stableford competition off full handicap played in three sections. These were ladies, juniors and men with three prizes being awarded for the first two categories and four in the men's. The ladies’ category was won by Sally Hicks-Beach with thirty eight points. Second place went to Lesley Pascoe with thirty six points beating Jackie Carr on countback. First place in the junior section went to Ryan Stevenson with thirty eight points. This total was also shared by both Alex Webb and James Parker, who finished second and third respectively on countback.

The men's section was won by John Pitts, who also scored thirty eight points with Tony Lloyd losing out on countback. Third place went to Richard Pascoe and fourth to Clive Hutchings, who both finished on thirty six points. With a total of six players finishing on thirty eight points, the overall winner of the JAHD trophy, with the best back nine, was Ryan Stevenson. Four of the top six places were filled by juniors, which underlines Stover's present strength in this department, having recently won the local junior South Devon League.

Last Wednesday Jason Fullard and his Stover team including Martin Wright, Andy Moore and Chris O’Brien managed to win the Torquay Pro Am. Playing in the morning they managed to miss the rain and they posted a solid 10 under par, which remained unbeaten throughout the day.

After the course maintenance week the course is in pretty good condition and considering the solid coring of the greens, they are putting quite well.

This years Junior Open and Daily Telegraph Qualifier took place on Friday 21st August. Pictured above are the Prize Winners.

DCGU Dartmoor Trophy - Ladies Championships

The weather over the past week has been shocking! However Stover was proud to be host to the Dartmoor Trophy last Thursday. As a club we are not on the DCGU Rota very often and it was great to showcase our course and facilities to golfers across the south west. The event is for single figure golfers aged over 35. Former Stover member Graham Ruth pipped our very own Jason Hampton for the trophy (hard to believe that Jason is over 35!)

The Ladies’ Section at Stover was well supported when they played their Club Championships; over 36 holes on Ladies’ Day this year unlike the previous few years when it was played over 2 days at a weekend. The weather for the day was exceptional as there were no rain showers! The course for the day was in excellent condition, making the day very successful for some of the participants. This year Nikki Kedge edged out Jo Hicks Beach with two solid rounds of 81.

The Club Championship Salver was won by Nikki Kedge off a 6 handicap with a gross 162 over the 36 holes. The runner up to scratch was Jo Hicks-Beach off 2 handicap with a gross 164 and won the Molly Prowse Plate. Third scratch was Sarah Hoff off 5 handicap with a gross 167.

1st Net (over 36 holes) was won by Ann-Marie Cleave (18) with 145 who received The Handicap Salver. 2nd Net was Annette Haigh (9) with 153. 3rd Net was Ladies’ Competition Secretary Angie Hickey (12) also with 153 over the 36 holes.

The best 1st round scratch score was Sally Hicks-Beach (9) and the best 2nd round scratch score was Betty Pledger (17). The Silver Eclectic winner was Hilary Richards (17) with 68 and the Bronze Eclectic winner was Anne Greenwell(23) with 65.
