SIXTY-ONE PAIRS CONTEST THE BULPIN BOWL

A large field competed in one of the first competitions of the season at Stover Golf Club, the Bulpin Bowl.

The trophy was presented in 1938 by the late Mr A.C. Bulpin who Newtonians will remember as the owner of Bulpins Garage, which was a large establisment in Wolborough Street prior to the various redevelopments, over the years, of this part of the town.

Mr Bulpin was President of the Club from 1970-1983.

The competition was a Greensome Medal with 7/16th of combined handicaps. The winners with an excellent net 61 were Danny Booker & Ryan Gillingwater followed closely by Dave Mugford & Peter Rowlands on 63, Jon Jones & Tom Mitchell on 64, Roger Percy & Gerald Hambling 65 and Dave Bunclark & Roger Fyfe also on 65.

EASTER WEEKEND AT STOVER

A large entry of over a hundred contested the first major mens' club competition of the year, the Ault Bowl. The format being a bogey competition under handicap in which each player pits his skill against the course. The cold blustery weather conditions added to the degree of difficulty but this did not appear to affect the winner, Des Phillips, who recorded a superb score of +7 from joint second Curtis Small & Jack Johnson +5. Equal third were Ron Cann & Ryan Stevenson +3.

The Mixed Advertiser & Badcock Cup (Mixed Fouromes Stableford) was played on Easter Monday with a field of 34 pairs enjoying the mild but pleasant conditions.    The format of 7/16th handicap proved just the ticket for the winners; Barbara and Roger Percy who scored 37 points, The runners up with 34 points were Jane Vooght and the Club Captain Dudley Price.  Tird and Fourth positions with 33 and 31 points respectively were Lesley & Richard Pascoe and Muriel & Cress Waldron.

The wind and rain has given the course a fair pounding this week however, last weekend we did manage to get the first Monthly Medal played. The course played really tough with the standard scratch going up to 71 and only three players broke 80 and congratulations go to both Clive Hutchings and Jack Elson who won Division 1 and 2 respectively.

I was especially pleased to see Graham Stewart come in with a net 70 for second place in division two. Graham has worked very hard at his game throughout the winter and has had one or two lessons from myself and it was great to see a good score from Graham.

Free Taster Session

If you know somebody that might be interested in playing golf, Sarah has a FREE taster session this Saturday from 11.00 to 12.00. We shall supply the golf equipment and would welcome any of your friends or family that might want to try the game.

On Monday I took delivery of the new Cobra drivers and fairways and also the very latest Callaway ix balls that Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els have been using to such great effect and I have yet to try this new equipment but I shall be trying both soon and I shall give you some feedback in the coming weeks.

This week has been a very damp one and the course has had to be closed for a few days; however, even if it was open I doubt many would have wanted to play with such strong winds and driving rain. Spring is just around the corner (OK a very big corner!) and we must look forward to the new season.

Congratulations go to Gerry Hamling and Roger Percy (I think the handicap committee have got there eye on you two!!!!!!) on winning the Winter League last week with 46 points, beating Clive Hutchings and Keith Gimson, who had 44 points. In third place was Neil Goddard and Trevor Crossfield (probably the best left hander in South Bishopsteignton). Robert and Owen Vooght are still leading the Winter league, however many are on their tails.

On 25 January at 7.30pm, there is a quiz night at Stover and previous winners Jason Hampton, Mel Winter, Chris Holgate and Graham Green have been re-named The Big Head Eggs and could do with some competition and we would welcome any more teams that wish to join in. It is just £5 to enter and this includes a meal so come and join the fun.

It is with regret to tell you that long standing member Bill Johnstone passed away last week. I have not seen Bill since I returned to Stover a couple of years ago, but I remember playing many games with him as a junior and our sympathies go to his family.

Stover’s New Captain

Drives-In on New Years Day

Stover Golf Club’s outgoing Captain, Trevor Harvey, had two pleasant final duties to perform on New Year’s Day.

Firstly to report that £5,531.96 was raised for his chosen charity Home Farm Trust (supporting people with learning difficulties) and that the proceeds would fund the equipping of a Sensory Room.

The second duty was to introduce the Captain for 2008, Dudley Price.  Following a very well received address to the members, in which he also introduced his Vice Captain, John Bailey, Dudley proceeded to the first tee whereupon, his very accurate but distance challenged drive, split the fairway – he did however have the excuse of using a ‘demo’ hickory shafted, 50 year old driver, which he stated will hopefully be used in all future Captain Drive-in events.  His fine effort was duly applauded by the large assembled gathering.

The announcement, by the Secretary Will Hendry in the Clubhouse afterwards, that the winner of the ‘guess the drive-in distance’ competition was Mrs Margaret Allen, who generously donated to the 2008 charity.
